Assumptions on the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is a place that is spoken about a lot, but how exactly does the Supreme Court work? Being one of the main parts of government it was something that was taught to people at a fairly young age but was never described in all too much detail. The basics are taught, things like how it is the most powerful court, and their job in the process of creating a bill, but that is about it. The Supreme Court is extensive and has so many more parts to it, and in some cases, so little parts to it.

 One thing that I didn't know about was how few justices there have been in the court, there have been just over 100 justices in the 200 years that the Supreme Court has been around, with each justice averaging about 16 years but people being able to double those years. The Supreme Court is usually looked at as a court like the ones you see in the shows, but they are nothing close to that. The Supreme Court justices usually work in their offices, settling minor cases that they can just kind of throw away without any major thought needed. But when one of their cases does end up needing to be discussed as a group, they come together as a group and discuss.This doesn't mean they don't have a more normal court scene, they do, they just don't use it as much. The most surprising thing that I found out was that when they come together, they like to shake each others hands. Their theory is that you will be more respectful and won't hold a grudge against someone who hand you've shook. I think this is a really interesting approach that I never thought of, but make a lot of sense at the same time.

The most important takeaway from the videos that we watched was that their number one rule as a court is to follow The Constitution. The Constitution is what they base all of their decisions on. I think that is really interesting because so much time has passed in American history and that is still their one rule. This rule is extremely important and I think that it is great that they do that, I am just surprised that the rule is their number one thought and still is the basis of all of their decisions.
